The service men and women of this nation tirelessly serve to protect us and our freedom on a daily basis, whether this service is at home or abroad. One of the ways we thank them is by providing them with a final resting place for them and their spouses at no cost to them. Yesterday, a new cemetery was opened to help continue this service for our veterans.

North Mississippi Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Kilmichael, Mississippi finally finished its two year construction and held its dedication ceremony this past Wednesday, August 16th, to hundreds of people, including many veterans and their families.

“Cemetery Director Mark Lawson said its overwhelming to see how much of an impact the cemetery is having. ‘I’m at a loss for words,’ Lawson expressed. ‘I started crying right before the service started just because I was so emotional. It’s all come to a head and now we are here, (Providing, Smith).'”

This is the second state-owned cemetery in Mississippi and has enough burial space for approximately 110,000 veterans and their spouses. The cemetery is open to all branches of the military and to veterans all across the country, and the cemetery provides all services–burial site, open and closed on the burial site, concrete vaults for casket burial, a headstone, and perpetual care–at no cost to the service member and their spouse.

Monday the cemetery will receive its first burial.
