Old cemeteries never cease to amaze or surprise, as one cemetery trustee has found.
George Collins, a former professor and an active trustee for the Mt. Bethel Cemetery in Greeneville, Pennsylvania has a more than a few mysteries he’s trying to solve and needs help from the public.
While helping with maintaining the property and improving the grounds, a few of the older headstones have brought about some questions that Collins, nor anyone else at the cemetery, has answers to.
One of the first headstones reads:
Earnest Arwood
1898 – 1942
Friends, Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus
“Collins wrote, ‘Who was Earnest Arwood? What was his connection to the circus? What is the story of circumstances leading to his passing? Why did his ‘friends’ with the circus apparently furnish the headstone?’ (With History, Judd).”
The cemetery also has a mausoleum, which was never used but had two names inscribed on the sides. The cemetery would like to know who these individuals were.
If you have any information on these graves, please contact George Collins at [email protected] or by calling 423-787-0218.
