This week will mark the dedication of the new Omaha National Cemetery. The cemetery will serve the burial needs for more than 112,000 honorably discharged military veterans, their spouses, and eligible dependents at no charge. The first phase of the project is to complete an initial 60 acres, which will provide burial options for the next 10 years.
As a Army Reservist, I’ve had the privilege to work with some of the best men and women in the world. No one enlists in the military for a pat of the back and to receive thanks or praise. We serve because we love this country, which has provided so many opportunities for us, and we in turn want to protect those rights for our neighbors, community, and our fellow country men and women. Knowing that fellow veterans don’t have to worry about placing a financial burden on their family after their passing and to be laid to rest in the country they love is a great comfort.
